To check a PDF in Chrome before downloading it, scan the page for PDF links, analyze the exact link you intend to use, and review the file's metadata, encryption, AI-generation clues, and structure indicators. If the result matches your task, open the PDF in Chrome for a visual check. Download only the exact file you inspected, and do not ignore a Chrome or organization security warning.

This reduces blind downloading; it does not make an untrusted file safe. PDFCheck has a separate, optional, account-gated virus scan in its file-upload flow. Standard Chrome-extension analysis does not silently enable that scan.

How to Analyze a PDF Link Before Download
1. Check the page and link context
Confirm that you are on the expected website. Read the PDF link text and inspect the visible destination domain before acting. A familiar page design is not enough: a link can point somewhere else. If Chrome displays a red unsafe-site warning, stop rather than using an extension to work around it.
2. Scan the page for PDF links
Open the PDFCheck extension and choose Scan page for PDF links. The extension checks the current page for visible links whose destination ends in .pdf and lists each match. This scan runs only when you request it. It may not find links hidden inside an iframe, generated after the page loads, or routed through a download button without a visible PDF URL.
3. Select the exact document
When several files appear, match the link label, filename, domain, date, and document purpose. Do not select a similarly named attachment by position alone. After you choose Analyze, the selected PDF is sent to PDFCheck over HTTPS for analysis. Page scanning itself does not upload every link.
4. Read the result as evidence—not a verdict
Start with file type, size, page count, PDF version, encryption, creation and modification dates, Creator, and Producer. Unexpected software or date order can justify a closer review. It is not proof of fraud: legitimate export tools rewrite metadata, and metadata fields can be edited.
If changes matter, use the fuller workflow for checking whether a PDF has been edited. Compare the result with a trusted source, not just with what you hoped the document would contain.
5. Open the file in Chrome for visual review
Diagnostics cannot tell you whether a total is wrong, a page is missing, or a signature block belongs to the transaction. Open the PDF in Chrome and inspect all pages. Search for a distinctive phrase, check page order and cropping, open essential links, and test any form fields you need. For important documents, compare the file against the sender's known record or another approved source.
6. Download the exact file you reviewed
If the checks support proceeding, download the same PDF and give it a deliberate filename. Do not substitute another attachment with a similar name. Keep the original unchanged, then complete the final PDF validation checklist before forwarding, uploading, signing, or archiving it.
What Chrome Can Do Without an Extension
Google announced built-in PDF annotations and direct Save to Google Drive on February 19, 2026. The current Chrome PDF feature announcement says users can highlight text, add notes, and save PDFs to a dedicated Drive folder without a download-and-reupload cycle.
Google's current Chrome PDF help covers opening, searching, annotating, signing, and downloading PDFs. Use Chrome's viewer when the question is visual: “Can I read, search, mark, or save this page?” Use PDFCheck when the question is diagnostic: “What file properties and warning signs should I review?”
These jobs are complementary. Neither a clean visual preview nor tidy metadata establishes that the file's claims are true.
Privacy and Extension Permissions
Install browser extensions only from a source you trust, and read the permission prompt. Google explains how to manage Chrome extensions and site access, including limiting access to the current site or selected sites when an extension supports that control.
PDFCheck's page scan is on-demand. The selected file is transmitted to PDFCheck for analysis, so do not use it for confidential, regulated, or client-controlled documents unless your policy permits that upload. If an online service is not allowed, download through your approved process and use authorized local security and document tools instead.

PDFCheck capability boundary
Standard PDFCheck analysis surfaces observable file properties, AI-generation clues, encryption status, parsing, and structure indicators. The separate account-gated virus scan runs only when you explicitly select it in the file-upload flow. Neither mode proves sender identity or legal authenticity, guarantees that a URL is safe, or replaces an approved antivirus, sandbox, signature-trust review, or organization policy.

Google's current download-warning guidance says to take Chrome warnings seriously and not follow instructions to turn them off or ignore them. A document workflow should add context to that protection—not bypass it.
